One Giant Step For Psychiatry! Moving Beyond The DSM

Transforming Diagnosis

This has been a long time coming. We have gotten nowhere conducting research based on current DSM nosology. Clinically, I rarely come across patients who meet the DSM box for a particular "disease." Given the fact that psychiatric conditions as seemingly different as ADHD and schizophrenia share several common genes and the great overlap of symptoms between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia for example, it no longer makes sense to stick with the categorical model. We need a dimensional approach that respects the complexity of the human beings we actually treat.
